Father Goose (1964) is a romantic comedy-adventure film starring Cary Grant in one of his more humorous and unconventional roles. Directed by Ralph Nelson, the film is set during World War II and features Grant as Walter Eckland, a gruff, anti-social beach bum living in the South Pacific. His quiet, carefree life is upended when the British Navy enlists him to serve as a coast watcher, monitoring enemy activity on a remote island.

Eckland’s isolation is further disrupted when a French schoolteacher, Catherine Freneau, played by Leslie Caron, and her group of seven young schoolgirls become stranded on his island. What follows is a clash of personalities, as Grant’s cranky, reluctant hero must cope with the prim and proper Catherine, along with the chaos of caring for the girls.

Cary Grant's portrayal of Eckland in Father Goose is a departure from his usual suave, debonair characters. Here, he leans into a more rugged, comedic role, complete with scruffy appearance and snarky attitude. His chemistry with Caron adds to the film’s charm, as the two characters gradually fall in love amid the lighthearted chaos.

The film was well received, winning an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and remains one of Grant's memorable late-career performances before he retired from acting.
